Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her maternal grandparents and mother. She is an only-child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education and also worked at two other jobs. Her goal was to be a teacher of English at a secondary school. After 3 years of working as teacher's assistant and studying the possibility of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. Then she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. During an Roots performance, she came out in the spotlight as an artist. Then, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. While on the Canada tour for The Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable performance experience. She was the first signed artist on Hidden Beach Recordings. Hidden Beach Recordings label.
